Muraqaba: The Art of Spiritual Contemplation
Discover the ancient practice of Islamic meditation — the gateway to divine closeness, self-purification, and spiritual awakening.
What is Muraqaba?
Muraqaba (مراقبة) — often referred to as Islamic meditation or deep spiritual contemplation — is a central practice for attaining profound closeness to Allah, experiencing His divine vision, and establishing direct communication with Him.
Lexically, Muraqaba means to observe, to meditate, or to reflect deeply. Spiritually, it signifies a constant state of awareness of Allah's presence and one's own inner self — a vigilance of the Qalb that transforms every moment into an act of worship.
It stands as one of the five primary means of connecting with Allah:
History & Importance
The practice of Muraqaba is deeply rooted in the prophetic tradition. All prophets, from Adam (AS) to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), diligently engaged in Muraqaba to forge and maintain their divine connection.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) himself spent 15 years in deep contemplation in the Cave of Hira before receiving his first revelation. The Awliya (saints) and spiritual guides throughout history have continued this blessed practice, transmitting its method across generations.
"There is no act of worship comparable to deep reflection or Muraqaba."— Hadith of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
Why is Muraqaba considered essential?
- Considered spiritually superior to decades of conventional worship due to its profound impact on the soul and heart.
- Increases Ilm-e-Ma'arifat — unlocks profound knowledge of divine truths and hidden spiritual secrets.
- Self-Purification — thoroughly cleanses the soul, subduing the impulses of the Nafs (lower self).
- Opens the Inner Eye (Basirah) — enables perception of subtle spiritual realities and the divine vision of Allah and the Prophet (PBUH).
How to Practice Muraqaba
The methodology of Muraqaba involves a systematic approach to focusing the mind and heart. These progressive steps are best undertaken under the guidance of an authorised spiritual master.
- 01
Preparation
Find a quiet, clean place free from worldly distractions. Sit comfortably, facing the Qibla if possible, in a posture that permits stillness and sustained ease throughout the session.
- 02
Sincere Intention — Niyyah
Make a sincere intention to engage in Muraqaba purely for the sake of Allah — to attain His closeness, purify the soul, and seek His divine vision.
- 03
Focus on the Qalb (Spiritual Heart)
Direct your awareness to the spiritual heart, located slightly to the left side of the chest. This is the seat of divine light and the primary point of connection between the servant and the Divine.
- 04
Connecting Through the Murshid
For beginners, it is essential to connect spiritually through a genuine and authorised spiritual guide (Murshid), who acts as a spiritual conduit, transmitting Fayez and guiding the seeker through the subtle realms.
- 05
Silent Remembrance — Dhikr
Some methods involve silent remembrance of Allah's names or specific invocations within the heart, aligned with the breath, deepening focus and opening the spiritual channels.
- 06
Progressive Connection & Duration
Through consistent practice, focus progresses from the Qalb to deeper spiritual stations, ultimately ascending toward direct connection with Allah's presence (Arsh). Begin with 10–15 minute sessions and extend gradually.
