The Spiritual Significance of a Name
In Muhammadi Islam, the act of naming a child holds profound spiritual and social importance. A name is not merely an identifier; it is a prayer, a blessing, and can subtly influence a child's character and destiny. Parents bear the responsibility and spiritual duty to bestow a meaningful and auspicious name upon their child, ideally within seven days of birth (often associated with the Aqeeqah sacrifice).
“On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers' names, so make your names good.”
— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) · Abu Dawud
Choosing a blessed name connects the newborn to the legacy of righteousness and reminds the family of their covenant with Allah. In the Muhammadi tradition, naming is an act of worship that reflects love for the Divine and hope for the child’s noble character.
