Hadith: The Second Source of Islamic Law and Wisdom

After the Holy Quran, the Hadith (أحاديث) form the second primary source of Islamic law and a profound wellspring of wisdom. Hadith are the recorded sayings, actions, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They provide essential context, elaboration, and practical application for the principles laid out in the Quran.

In Muhammadi Islam, deeply understanding and emulating the Hadith and Sunnah (Prophet's practice) is vital for spiritual growth, as it is through following his example that one truly manifests love for Allah.

“I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.”
— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) · Muwatta Malik

Selected Authentic Hadith (with Translation & Commentary)

Here is a selection of authentic Hadith that are particularly emphasized in Muhammadi Islam, offering profound insights into faith, practice, and the spiritual path.

On the Importance of Intention

إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى
Innamal a'malu bin-niyyat, wa innama likulli imri'in ma nawa.
Translation: “Actions are but by intentions, and every man shall have but that which he intended.”
Commentary: This fundamental Hadith (from Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) highlights the immense importance of sincere intention (Niyyah) in all acts, particularly in worship. In Muhammadi Islam, outward actions gain spiritual weight and acceptance from Allah only if they are accompanied by pure, conscious intentions from the heart.

On the Love for the Prophet (PBUH)

La yu’minu ahadukum hatta akoona ahabba ilaihi min walidihi wa waladihi wan-nasi ajma'een.
Translation: “None of you will believe until I am dearer to him than his father, his children, and all mankind.”
Commentary: This Hadith (from Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim) underscores the indispensable nature of profound love for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a prerequisite for complete Iman. Being an Ashiq-e-Rasul (Lover of the Prophet) is a core principle in Muhammadi Islam, leading to spiritual illumination and divine acceptance.

On Muraqaba (Deep Reflection)

لاَ عِبَادَةَ كَالتَّفَكُّرِ
La `ibadata kat-tafakkur.
Translation: “There is no act of worship comparable to deep reflection/contemplation (Muraqaba).”
Commentary: This Hadith (narrated by some Sufi scholars) highlights the immense spiritual value of Muraqaba in Muhammadi Islam. It suggests that focused spiritual contemplation, which purifies the heart and opens it to divine realities, can be superior to decades of conventional outward worship, leading directly to Ilm-e-Ma'arifat (spiritual knowledge).

On Renewal of Religion (Mujaddids)

Inna Allaha yabathu li hadhihil-ummah ala ra'si kulli mi'ati sanatin man yujaddidu laha dinaha.
Translation: “Verily, Allah will send for this Ummah at the head of every century someone who will renew its religion.”
Commentary: This Hadith (from Sunan Abi Dawud) provides the divine promise for the periodic revival of Islam through Mujaddids (renewers). It validates the historical and ongoing role of spiritual luminaries like Sufi Emperor Hazrat Syed Mahbub-e-Khoda Dewanbagi (RA) in restoring the authentic spirit of Muhammadi Islam during times of decline.
“Whoever revives a Sunnah of mine that has been abandoned after me, he will have a reward like that of those who act upon it without diminishing their rewards in the slightest.”
— Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) · Sunan al-Tirmidhi
